This image is the first color print I ever made. It was done for assignment 3 in my color class at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. We were told to pick an object and make a study of it. I chose a shed. Five rolls of film later, I believe this is one of the best shots of the bunch. I still have lots of other shots to print with the enlarger so there may be more interesting ones that surprise me from the contact sheets.

I have to say, printing color photos by hand is hard work. I have a new found respect for photographers practicing their craft in the pre-digital era. This probably took me about an hour and half to get it where I wanted it to be. Hopefully, I can speed this process up as I get more accustomed to the equipment. I am starting at ground zero here as I have absolutely no previous lab experience.

Also, I have a lot of slide film from Assignments 1 and 2 that I am dying to post but the folks who developed this film and ran the scans messed them up badly and I don't have a scanner of my own. Thankfully they are now working on scanning them for me, so I hope to post a select few within the week.

I just started taking a color photography class taught by Terri Weifenbach at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, D.C.

I will document this class on the blog as a way for me to archive my notes, assignments and work. I will also post images I take for the class, but since today was just the introduction I really have no photos to share that are associated with any official assignments.

However, we were asked to bring in 10 of our favorite photos that we have taken over the course of our photography careers for next week's class. The images I plan to share are the ones you see below, many of which you may have already seen on this blog. Some of them are my personal favorites while others are images that I have sold in galleries, been published or won awards/competitions with. I am sparring my lomography favorites though. These are all taken with my Canon 60D.

Our first two assignments are as follows

    1. Black and White in Color/Saturated Color

    • Bring in 4 slides with as little color as possible. Shoot as close to black and white found in the natural world. Seek out monochromatic environments. Looks for shades of grey. Shoot in daylight only. Use some depth of field in the shots.
    • Bring in 4 slides of photos chock-full of color. Include as much color as possible in each image.

    2. Mixed Lighting

    • Bring in 6 slides using as many different light sources in each image as possible, i.e. fluorecent, incandescent, candlelight, halogen street lights, etc.

All film must be processed and mounted (in slides). Due February 1, 2012.

    Recomended films:

    Fuji Velvia 100 ASA
Fuji Sensia 200 or 400 ASA (Interesting choice by the instructor because this film line was discontinued in 2010)

(Note: I actually do have an expired roll of Sensia 200 which I have already began shooting on for assignment 2. I also have ten fresh rolls of Velvia 100. And, I do have one roll of expired Kodak Elite Chrome 100 that I may break out if I need it.)

    Supplies I need to purchase:

40 Rolls of color negative film. (Suggested brands. Kodak Ektar 100, Porta 160 and/or Porta 800. Fuji Pro 400H, ProCZ (Discontinued), Superia CN100 (Discontinued - Lomography.com sells their own version), Superia CA200 (24 exp rolls) and/or Superia CH400 (24 exp rolls).

5-6 boxes 8x10 or 11x14 Fuji Type II Crystal Archive color photographic paper (matte, lustre or glossy) (Note: Check reviews on BHPhoto's site. Not all are good especially for glossy paper).

    Important

Get film processed at Dodge Chrome, 4885 MacArthur Blvd., Washington, D.C. 20007 202-333-3270. For Color Negatives ask for no cut. E6 processing should get mounted.

In class drop for processing on Tuesdays by 4 p.m. with Kimberly Wade (flat file).
